Snowy Trails and a Banana

I just got in from a solo run on my favorite route.
I took it slooow because (1) I didn't want to slip on any ice and (2) I decided to just listen to what my body wanted instead of pushing for a time or distance goal.

Distance - 7.05 miles
Time - 1 hour

This was my slowest run in a long time, and I am so glad I did it.  I've been working so hard during every run--fast speed workouts and super long long runs.  It's about time I gave myself a little break.  This run felt like a good cardio workout, and while I know that every run is a good cardio workout, I'm not aware of that aspect most of the time.  My attention is always drawn to my form when I'm running fast or my calves when I'm running long and I always let my breathing be my central concern.  But today I lightened up on all the pressure to perform better, and it allowed me to see and appreciate the raw pleasure of just getting my heart rate up for an hour.

And, of course, I got a chance to see and appreciate my favorite trail (which I haven't run in at least a month!).
This was the ideal Valentine's Day run.  It was all about my heart and the route I love.  I think I just took my relationship with running to the next level.

I also have found the very best and tastiest recovery snack in the history of existence.  Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you...
The dark chocolate dipped, almond covered banana.  The greatest thing to hit running since the GPS watch.  I got the idea from last month's Runner's World.

All you need is a banana, about 1/4 cup of dark chocolate chips, and 2 tbsp sliced almonds (or chopped nuts of your choice).  Put the choco chips in a bowl and microwave for 1 minute, stirring once half way through.  The chocolate will be shiny and smooth when you stir it. Peel the banana and spoon the chocolate onto it, smearing it down the sides.  Press the almonds into the chocolate.  Voila!  Quick, simple, and fun.  Plus, it has lots of good-for-you carbs in the banana, quality protein in the almonds, and plenty of delicious in the chocolate.  Who needs chocolate milk?

What do you use to refuel? I usually just drink some chocolate soymilk, but I think I'm gonna make this banana thing a regular treat.  I like any and every excuse to get more fresh fruit and veg.

Do you have a favorite running route that you keep returning to over and over again?  I think I'm so partial to this one route because it was the first one I started running when I was transitioning into long distance running last summer.  It just has a special place in my running history and my heart, I guess.

With that, I want to wish you all a HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

  1. Good for you for forcing yourself to slow down! I definitely struggle with that too but really, we'll be faster if we do. Great run! I prefer chocolate milk but that's just because I don't like almonds or bananas. To each his own :)

    1. It's crazy how hard it is to slow down sometimes! But it's so true that I need it if I'm going to get faster. Also, ain't no shame in loving choco milk. It's pretty awesome!

  2. Happy Valentines Day!!! That banana looks amazing!!! I'm super cool and run the same trail basically every time I run. Kinda sorta. So there is a beautiful 10 mile path along the Potomac in VA that I like to run. It goes 5 miles north from where I start and about 5 miles south. It also branches into DC and at the ends it turns into some other random paths that I have run as well. My runs always start and end on it but with the 5+ mile runs I can mix up the middle miles and go wherever in DC. My favorite right now is the Teddy Roosevelt Island because it is a trail!

    1. My husband is from DC (grew up by the Tenley Town metro), so I've spent a lot of time in DC. It's one of my very favorite places to run. There is so much to look at! Things feel kind of samey-samey here in NJ. I dream of living in an exciting place one day.

  3. Ha. One of my favorite snacks is the opposite of your banana: banana with almond butter and M&Ms (though I am sure dark chocolate chips would work).

  4. That banana looks AMAZING. My special running route is Witherspoon Woods - I've had so many passionate runs there: exploring, thinking, angry, happy, sad, with friends, alone....

  5. Perfect refuel for the day ;) I was soooo pumped when RW featured chocolate last issue. It only justified my chocoholic tendencies to the hubby! ;)
