"Ultramarathons are 90% mental, and the other 10% is mental." - Ray Zahab
So I took a little break from my work this evening so I could watch Running the Sahara. It's a documentary narrated by Matt Damon about three crazies super athletes who decided to run across the Sahara Desert which, for the geographically-challenged out there, is located in northern Africa.
They ran 4,300 miles, a line stretching from the Atlantic ocean all the way to the Red Sea. They ran for 12 hours per day and they fought with dehydration, heat rash, and even uncooperative border patrol at various countries along the way.
Watching what these guys do, I have to agree with Zahab (who is one of the runners) that this beast is 90% mental and 10% mental, but I would add that it's also another 60% physical. It's a good movie. Check it out.
My day was pretty nice. I went to Rutgers to attend a seminar this morning. They are the philosophers on the hill.
It's a version of the Ivory Tower.
I hope you had a great day too!

wowee, never heard of that movie. That sounds incredible!
ReplyDeleteI need to check it out! Not that I would ever RUN the Sahara, but I deff toy with running a marathon in Africa. When I win the lottery I am deff traveling the world and running races everywhere I go (not that I play the lottery)
ReplyDeleteYay Rutgers! You were in my 'hood. I hope you didn't get too lost getting around all gazillion of Rutgers' campuses! I totally want to watch that movie!
ReplyDeleteAmy, I was just listening to a podcast that totally made me think of you! It was Freakonomics Radio, episode You Eat What You Are Part 2 from June 6th, 2012.
DeleteAlso, if you have time tomorrow night, you should come out to the Princeton Running Company. They are doing a group run with Asics and you can enter a raffle for free shoes.
Ahhh. I teach on Thurs. nights :( I will totally listen to that podcast though. I am around this weekend if you want to run and chat! Though, admittedly, I am terrified to try to run and talk with you at the same time, you speed demon.
DeleteOh dear lord, running in any desert is a no no for me. I'm reading a book about Scott Jurek and he runs through death valley, and that sounds awful too! Still sounds like a good documentary though!
ReplyDeleteOh you should check out Born to Run by Chris McDougall too. More desert running. Very intense.
DeleteI gotta see that movie! I have a feeling it would get me totally geeked to go out and get some miles. I can't even imagine running like that, but at the same time I can... Sort of. Thanks!
ReplyDelete4,300 miles. Good grief. I am tired just thinking about that.
