Cherish your friends

At 7:45 am my alarm clock blared at me: GetUpIt'sTimeToRun.GetUpIt'sTimeToRun.GetUpIt'sTimeToRun.

After yesterday's 8 miler, I wasn't exactly feelin' it.
Ya know what I mean?

Fortunately, I had a date with my running buddy--Meg--so excuses weren't going to cut it.  I oatmealed up, laced up, and headed out the door.  I used the mile and a half to our meet up spot as a warm up, and you can imagine my excitement when she said:  "So I'm thinking we could do 11 miles today."  My jaw fell on the concrete.

...10 miles later, now I'm at home.  Showered, refueled with my choco soymilk, and resting comfortably in my compression socks.  Meg finished up her mileage goal without me.

Distance - 10 miles
Time - 1:24:00

That was a tough run, too tough for me to get through on my own.  Thank goodness for Meg.  She really does make me a better runner.
And that's why I am repaying my debt to her by running with her in her very first half marathon!  It's the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon in Delaware (that'll be my 4th state) and it's on St. Patrick's Day (March 17th).  I'm really excited to be running another (yeah, yet another) half, but I'm even more excited for Meg.  She's gonna leave me in the dust, that speedy little devil, and I'm gonna love every second of it!

Are any of you thinking of adding another race to your Spring calendar?  Tell me all about it!  I get so excited hearing about people's goals!

  1. 19 miles in the last two days? I wish you were on team escapades in the Chilly Challenge! Those are some great two-day numbers.

    1. What is this challenge anyway? Can I join your team or is it too late?

  2. I really hope to run with a friend later on this year - I'm in the process of convincing them running a 1/2 is a good idea :) haha!
It is definitely great to have someone to run with, especially on the days where you're simply not feeling it!

  4. I love the photo of adorable kitty. I'll have to check out Team Escapades. Currently, I have one race on calendar for the spring - the NYC Half Marathon in March. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm also working toward eating a mainly plant-based diet - meat and dairy in moderation. I look forward to reading more posts!

    1. I'm so jealous that you are running that race! Were you supposed to run the marathon? And good luck with the diet change. I promise you it's worth it!

  5. HOLY! You ran 8 miles and then 10 the next day? I think I would fall over and die. Megans are pretty awesome so I am glad you have a real life friend named Megan to keep you company. For races... I am going on a bit of a race spending freeze (let's see how long that lasts) this year. I am only signed up for one race right now but I am thinking I will do a 1/2 every 3 months or so. That way I keep up with running and I can watch myself get faster (ideal situation). Oh and whats with waking up to an alarm clock on Sunday??

    1. Honestly, a little part of me DID fall over and die. I feel the same way about needing a race spending freeze. The best kept secret is that race organizers always need volunteers at expos, and if you ask for a comped registration in exchange for work they will totally hook you up. I did that for the Annapolis Half last December, and I felt really awkward asking for the registration, but they were relieved just to be able to repay me for the work I did! Give it a try! Oh, and I had to use the alarm to get up because otherwise I would have stayed in bed all day. Ha!

  6. Friends have a tricky way of helping you out. I've realized soooo many times half of the time it's just getting out the door and then next thing you know you're four miles in. But 18 in two days... You go!

As for races, I have two 5ks lined up, the Cupid's Chase Feb 9th in NYC then the JFK Runway Race APril 14th on you guessed it... The JFK Runway. Pretty excited.

  7. Wow! Great job putting in the miles this weekend!! Awesome that you have a friend to push you and keep you going. I usually run alone, but often my husband is out on he trail too just going a different pace. Even knowing he is there helps keep me a little more focused.

I'm doing a half St. Patrick's day too!!

    1. My husband and I used to run at different paces too. Now I just stay with him at whatever pace he wants to do for however long he wants to do it, and then I do an extra four or five miles. Haha! It's funny because he used to be in MUCH better shape than me, and I used to dream about what it would be like to zoom past him. Now I just enjoy the miles we get together.

Good luck with your half! I'm looking forward to reading about it. (And the rest of your blog.)
