A body in motion

Hey, hey!

I did my last pre-race run today!  Even better: I did the whole thing outside.

Distance - 5 miles
Time - 40 minutes

Do you guys remember Newton's first law of motion?

An object at rest will remain at rest unless an unbalanced force acts upon it.

I bring this up because Keith said to me today while we were getting moving again after a small break to look at the hundreds of geese that were convened on the frozen lake (no pics, sorry.  I guess it didn't happen.) that his momentum was screwed up.

So that got me to wondering about whether or not many people have trouble with the start-and-stop-and-start-again style of running.  On the one hand, there is tremendous support for interval training in the running world.  Both beginners and veterans alike are expected to improve their cardiovascular fitness and speed with interval workouts.

But I've also read some bloggers saying that they don't like to start and stop during aces, and Fartleks, which are probably the most intense intervals you can do, involve no stopping--only slowing down.

So what's the word?  Should we be giving ourselves a break during our runs or not?

Let me know what your preference is.

Right now I'm off... New York City is calling my name.  I'm running my fourth half marathon Sunday morning.  Wish me luck!

  1. I was in a team during tough mudder that needed me to stop frequently, which is fine, but I think those stops contributed to the injury to my knee. I think the stops were too long, so I was cooling down too much. I would say I prefer fartleks because I like how confident I feel while recovering in the run.

  2. I hardly ever stop while running.... In fact, I make all of my water stops quick (maybe 15 seconds?) and I try not to go to the bathroom (although that's not saying that I don't hit the bushes on occasion!). When I'm running, I usually am looking forward to going home and spending time with my kids. They are the best motivation to keep moving ;)
